Alright, to start, let me give you the two main reasons why so many people are speculating about 2012 being the end of the world:
NUMBER 1 : On December 21st 2012, for the first time in 26, 000 years, the Earth, the Sun and the center of the Milkyway Galaxy are all suppose to line up. Well, human beings haven't been around to see this sort of thing happen before but there are those who speculate that when this happens, its going to be some sort of a negative impact on the world, like for example, ending it...
NUMBER 2 : On December 21st 2012, The Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar or just the Mayan calendar for short, that has been counting down for over 5, 000 years comes to an end. Again, humans haven't been around to see this sort of things happening happen before but there are those who speculate that this too means the end of the world.
Now, is it remarkable that both these events are happening on the same day? Absolutely! Is it possible that it might be linked? Sure... The Mayans were very advanced for an ancient society and very well could have predicted this celestial event and set it as the end of their long count calendar. Does this coincidence however means that the world is coming to an end? Nope, I dont think so.
People have predicted the end of the world as being the year 1000, 1666, 1910, 1924, 1954, 1992, 2000... There have literally been thousands of doomsday predictions made throughout history but frankly, we are still here =.='' There is really nothing about this 2012 predictions that set that apart from the past predictions other than the fact it is getting so much attention.
The 2012 Apocalypitic predictions are baseless from historical view as well. Well yes, the ancient Mayans did in fact say that December 21st 2012 as the end of their long count calendar. This is not ment to be the end of time for the Mayans but its just simply the end of an era. If the Mayans still exist as a great society today, they would probably have another long count calendar to take the place of the old calendar as soon as it is done. Most historians think that the end of the calendar for the Mayans would be a time for celebrations, it would'nt be feared as the time for the end of the world.
So why is it so many people buy into this baseless theories about the end of the world? What we don't know scares us, and when we are scared of something, we tend to speculate about it and when we speculate about something, we tend to have fun. Its not the same sort of fun like we ride a roller coaster or go to a game but more like a fear induced adrenaline rush, the same reason we go and see horror movies.
The fact is nobody knows when the end of the world is going to be and when someone claims to, they are either an asshole, naive, crazy or out to make a buck. December 21st 2012 IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!! I will bet whoever is reading my blog a Gazillion U$ Dollars that it will not happen, but even if does happen, we would all be dead and I won't pay you =) Leave a comment below on your thoughts on my theory about December 21st 2012 being the end of the world.
